Five Mistakes To Avoid When Doing Your Nails
If you’re someone who cares about the impression you make, then you realise that people often look at your hands just as often as they look at your face first. Doing your nails up just right is a wonderful way to make sure that you’re giving off a stylish and well-put-together image. However, if you’re making the mistakes below, then you can end up sabotaging that impression quite a bit.
Not Giving Your Nails A Break
First of all, if you are noticing that your nails are consistently looking thinner and more likely to experience breakage, then it’s not just because you’re applying polish wrong, it might be because you’re applying polish too often. Your nails need time to breathe and recover from the effects of polish. When you’re giving them a break once in a while, be sure to look for strengthening treatments like cuticle oil that can help nourish them and keep them strong.
Skipping The Prep
What’s more, if you jump right to applying coats of polish, you could be doing a lot more damage than usual. Good nail preparation, such as applying a professional standard builder gel, ensures that nails have more strength and structure, which helps manicures last longer and maintains a professional look. Aside from using builder gel, you should remove any old polish and lightly buff the surface before applying any new layers.
Using Too Many Thick Layers Of Polish
You want to make sure that you’re getting full coverage of the nail, but if you’re applying too many thicker coats of nail polish, then your nails are going to take a lot longer to dry and are going to be more likely to smudge at the same time. The thicker your coats, the greater the chance of bubbling and peeling, which can result in a ruined manicure. Take your time and apply thin, even coats, allowing each to dry before you apply the next.
Skipping Base and Top Coats
You have to ensure that you apply a proper base coat to prevent staining and ensure that your nail polish adheres properly. Meanwhile, a top coat helps to seal in the colour, adds shine, and can be the perfect opportunity to top up your nails with layered colours and designs. Skipping either can drastically decrease the longevity of your manicure. Make sure that you apply a new top coat every few days to preserve the layers below, as well.
Filing Your Nails Wrong
If you file your nails too aggressively or recklessly, it’s going to weaken your nails, causing them to split and break more easily. Instead of using a coarse file to file back and forth repeatedly, invest in a fine-grit file. Most importantly, file your nails in one direction, avoiding the micro-tears that are caused by going back and forth over the same spots.
If you love to do up your nails, make sure that you take the time to do it right and, just as important, to know when to give your nails a rest.
