How to choose the ideal wedding music

Hello you lovely lot, Happy Sunday! Storm Dennis is smashing around outside and I’m taking the opportunity to do some much needed wedmin (wedding admin). As you know, my wedding is fast approaching!. Our wedding is going to be less than traditional but as with any big day, the music is one of the most important parts!
Selecting the soundtrack for any celebration can be hard at the best of times. Whether that’s a birthday bash, a moving in party, or a family shindig. But imagine the importance of picking one of the biggest playlists of your life – the one for your big day!

Sounds a bit daunting, right? Where to start – a band, a DJ, or even both?! Luckily, I’ve gathered some of my top tips on how to choose the ideal wedding music to help you out.

Decide on the theme

If your wedding has a theme, you might want to match this to the music to keep things consistent.

If you’re going for a delicate, romantic feel, you’ll probably want to steer away from heavy indie (unless that’s your thing), and vice versa. If you don’t have a wedding theme, or an official one anyway, then just choose based on what suits you both as a couple. Decide on the theme of your relationship, as opposed to the theme of one day.

Get some inspiration

Talk to friends, do your research, go to see live music or just spend your daily commute listening to the best in Spotify’s new playlists. Whatever you do, it’s important to do your research, not just to match said theme, but you might find some new tunes you’d never thought of before. Or, discover some oldies but goodies that you’d long forgotten.

Pick your entertainment

Okay, so you’re nearly there – time to pick the entertainment.

As said before, you might want a band, or a DJ, or both. If you go for a band, you can choose from a range of genres – think Motown, R&B, swing, indie, or even a string quartet! The opportunities are endless and all are guaranteed to get the party started, and keep it going all night long.

Bands tend to make the night a bit more engaging – everyone loves joining in and singing along, as opposed to a DJ all night long. It’s usually best to opt for a band in the early evening, followed by a DJ or even your own controlled playlist on your phone/laptop.

Then you get the best of both worlds, too!

Sounds boring, but it is necessary to check with your chosen venue that you’re able to play what you want. If it’s a religious ceremony, there may be some rules and restrictions around this, or if you’re hiring a band, check in regards to noise levels and curfews – the last thing you want is someone complaining.

Finally, remember that music brings everyone together, and it’s all about celebrating your special day.

Having a mix of everything usually goes down well with everyone – pick the classics, the funky disco tracks which will get everyone on the dance floor, and the sing and dance along ones. But, make sure there are a few tracks in there which mean something special to you and your loved one (and don’t just limit it to the first dance, either)!
