Valentine’s Day Craft Ideas for Toddlers

Valentine’s Day is a wonderful opportunity to get creative with your little ones and celebrate love and friendship through fun crafts. If you follow my Instagram, you’ll know that we love a little craft in our house. Better yet, a crafty afternoon is a great way to entertain bored little ones on rainy days.

Whether you’re a seasoned crafter or new to the DIY scene, there are plenty of adorable and easy-to-make projects that toddlers will love. From handmade cards to heart-themed decorations, here are some delightful Valentine’s Day craft ideas perfect for toddlers.

Handprint Heart Cards

Help your toddler paint their hand with washable paint and press it onto a piece of card or paper to create a handprint. Repeat with different colours to make multiple handprints.

Once dry, cut out the handprints and arrange them in the shape of a heart on a folded piece of construction paper. Write a sweet message inside the card, and voila! You have a heartfelt Valentine’s Day card.

Love Bug Finger Puppets

We love this one but it needs quite a lot of adult support!

Simply cut out heart shapes from the red and pink craft foam or paper to create the bodies of the love bugs/ladybirds. Cut out smaller hearts for the wings and circles for the heads. Help your toddler glue the hearts and circles together to assemble the love bugs. Add googly eyes and draw on smiles with markers. To turn them into finger puppets, attach a small strip of paper to the back of each love bug using glue. Slip your fingers through the paper strips, and let the love bug puppet show begin!

Heart-shaped Suncatchers

Cut out heart shapes from contact paper (we get ours from Amazon) and peel off the backing to reveal the sticky side. Encourage your toddler to tear or cut small pieces of tissue paper and stick them onto the contact paper heart to create a colourful mosaic. This style of pinching and using pincer fingers is great for their motor skills. You’ll need some patience though.

Once the heart is covered with tissue paper, place another piece of contact paper over the top to seal the suncatcher. Trim any excess contact paper, punch a hole at the top of the suncatcher, and thread a ribbon or string through it to hang in a sunny window.

Love-themed Collage

This one is great for encouraging independent playing/creativity. We tend to do something like this when I’m making the dinner or need some time where I’m not attached to my velcro baby.

Set out a variety of craft supplies and let your toddler’s imagination run wild as they create their own love-themed collage. Encourage them to decorate the construction paper with stickers, glitter, sequins, and pom-poms to their heart’s content. They can make a collage of hearts, flowers, or anything else that comes to mind. Display their masterpiece proudly as a festive Valentine’s Day decoration.

The best thing with this one is, the more rustic it is, the better it looks!

Heart-shaped Stamp Art

Cut a potato in half and press a heart-shaped cookie cutter into the cut side to create a stamp. Help your toddler cut around the edges of the cookie cutter to create a heart-shaped stamp. Dip the stamp into washable paint and press it onto a piece of paper to create heart-shaped prints. Let your toddler experiment with different colours and patterns to make their own unique artwork.

These Valentine’s Day craft ideas are sure to delight your little ones and create cherished memories together. So gather your supplies, unleash your creativity, and enjoy some quality crafting time with your toddler this Valentine’s Day!
