Unbox Jack’s Start-Rite School Shoes With Us

There’s something so exciting about ticking off those back-to-school essentials, and for us, a great pair of school shoes is always at the very top of the list. School shoes are worn and, in Jack’s case, ran in, jumped in, explored in and more, every single day, so finding a pair that’s comfortable, supportive and built to last is a must.

This year, Jack is stepping into the new school term with a brand-new pair of Start-Rite Hat-trick school shoes, and we couldn’t wait to unbox them and see what all the fuss is about!

First Impressions

Straight out of the box, the Hat-trick shoes look incredibly smart. Made from premium black leather, they’re perfect for the classroom, the playground, the sandpit and even smart enough for school picture day while still having plenty of personality. Jack immediately spotted the subtle football embossing on the side, which was a huge hit with our little football fan!

The sporty, trainer-inspired design gives them a modern feel without compromising on school uniform standards, making them a style children genuinely want to wear.

The double rip-tape fastening is another feature we love. Not only does it make getting ready in the mornings much quicker (especially with a new baby brother thrown into the chaos), but it also encourages independence as younger children can fasten their own shoes with confidence. Independence like this is a key skill needed for any children starting school this September – and onwards.

Built for Busy Little Feet

As parents, we know that school shoes go through a lot. From running around the playground to climbing, skipping and everything in between, they need to cope with constant movement.

That’s one of the reasons we’ve always been impressed by Start-Rite. Fun fact: Jack’s first EVER pair of shoes were Start-Rite, following a Start-Rite fitting. Since then, we’ve never really looked back because they tick every box for our boy and us.

Start-Rite has spent years studying how children move, with its school shoe sole units informed by leading bio-mechanists to help protect and support natural foot development. As children’s feet grow, so does the way they walk, and Start-Rite has designed its sole units to change as shoe sizes and widths increase, helping to support every stage of a child’s developing gait.

It’s reassuring to know that so much thought has gone into every pair.

The Perfect Fit Matters

Every child’s feet are different, so one-size-fits-all simply doesn’t work when it comes to school shoes.

Start-Rite offers whole and half sizes alongside multiple width fittings, making it much easier to find a precise fit. Properly fitting shoes don’t just feel more comfortable—they also help growing feet develop naturally and reduce the chances of rubbing or discomfort during long school days. Every Start-Rite fitting we’ve been to has been nothing but thorough, often taking every option into consideration. We always leave feeling confident about things like his gait, his changing sizes and his comfort.

It’s one of those details that really sets the brand apart.

Comfort That Lasts All Day

Anyone with school-aged children knows just how active they are! Jack is no exception: from the minute he opens his eyes to the second he finally falls asleep, he is on the go.

Many Start-Rite school shoe styles feature proprietary Air-Rite technology, designed to let fresh air circulate around little feet while keeping water out. That means feet stay cooler, fresher and more comfortable throughout busy school days, whether they’re sitting in lessons, running around at lunchtime or heading off to after-school clubs.

Comfort really is key when shoes are being worn for six or seven hours every day.

Ready for Real Life

One feature we particularly appreciate on the Hat-trick shoes is the sturdy rubber toe and heel bumpers.

If your child is anything like Jack, you’ll know how quickly new shoes can end up covered in scuffs! These protective bumpers help shield the leather from everyday scrapes and knocks, helping the shoes stay looking smart for much longer. I like him to look smart as much as possible, and this nice feature basically does my work for me!

Combined with Start-Rite’s high-quality materials and durable construction, they’re designed to withstand everything the playground can throw at them while continuing to provide excellent support for growing feet all term long.

Putting Them to the Test Before September

Rather than waiting until the first day back at school, we’re giving Jack plenty of opportunities to wear his new shoes over the summer holidays.

Here’s how we’re putting them through their paces:

  • Family walks around the local park to help soften the leather and check the fit.
  • Trips into town where there’s plenty of walking.
  • Playground adventures to see how well they cope with climbing, running and jumping.
  • Practising getting dressed independently, including fastening the rip-tape straps himself.
  • Busy family days out where comfort really matters after hours on little feet.

Breaking school shoes in before September always helps make that first week back feel that little bit easier.

Our Verdict

The Start-Rite Hat-trick shoes tick every box for us. They’re smart enough for school, fun enough to get Jack excited about wearing them and packed with thoughtful features that support growing feet every step of the way.

Knowing they’re designed using research into children’s movement, available in precision fittings and built to withstand everyday adventures gives us real confidence that they’ll see him comfortably through the school term.

If you’re shopping for back-to-school shoes this year, Start-Rite is my top recommendation. Investing in a quality pair of school shoes means investing in your child’s comfort, confidence and foot development—and that’s something that makes all the difference when they’re spending so much of their day on their feet.

Here’s to happy feet, confident first days and a fantastic new school year!
