5 Things To Do When You Find Out You’re Pregnant
So, you’ve finally got that positive result you’ve been wishing for. Huge congratulations – from one pregnant Mummy to another! It’s a wild ride and I’m here along with you, baking baby number 2 as I do it.
It can feel daunting and, like me, you could be clueless as to what to do next. But you’re not alone.
Welcome to the most exciting, terrifying, emotional, bloated journey of your life. Grab a biscuit and let’s talk about the actual things you should do when you find out you’re pregnant. Spoiler alert: panic is optional, snacks are not.
1. Cry. Laugh. Cry Again. Repeat.
There is no correct emotional response to finding out you’re pregnant. Some people cry tears of joy. Some cry because they had a glass of wine last night. Some people Google “can anxiety go through the placenta.” It’s a full-blown emotional carousel, and you’re not getting off any time soon. Let it out, it’s ok. In fact, cry into a croissant. It helps.
Both times I finally got a positive result, my period was so late that it was sort of inevitable. Still, both times I was shaking like a leaf, trying to keep myself calm and crying real, genuine tears. I did both tests at the crack of dawn after having put it off for days, and then had a few hours to myself before telling my husband. It’s a very special, intimate time!

2. Tell Your Partner (or Don’t. Yet.)
If your partner’s the calm and collected type, fab. If they’re more “dropped the TV remote and cried during Bake Off” energy, maybe ease them in with a baby grow that says “Coming Soon.” Or just shout “I’M PREGNANT” across the living room and watch their face morph through five emotions at once. Honestly, priceless.
We are quite a private couple – believe it or not,, with a blog & content creation as my job. So, we chose to keep it to ourselves for quite a while and that worked for us.
3. Download Every Pregnancy App Ever Created

What do you mean you don’t want to know that your baby is now the size of a blueberry, a jellybean, and an avocado seed all at once? It’s important science, okay?! And don’t get me started on the forums — a weird and wonderful place where people argue over names like “Nevaeh” and whether heartburn actually means you’re having a hairy baby (science is still out)
4. Have a Full-On Existential Crisis in the Cheese Aisle
It starts with a question: Can I eat camembert?
Next thing you know, you’re six articles deep, crying in Tesco, wondering if your baby will come out looking like a wheel of cheddar. The “can I eat this?” stage of pregnancy is WILD. Brie is a maybe, sushi is a no, and caffeine is okay, but only if you count the milligrams like a maths professor on a deadline. Good luck.
Do your research and check search engines if you aren’t sure, but try to stick to a healthy diet with lots of fruit and veg.
5. Start a Secret Pinterest Board Called “Baby Stuff I Can’t Afford”
Baby moccasins? Check. A crib that costs more than your first car? Check. Woodland-animal-themed nursery wallpaper that you swear you’ll DIY? Checkity check. Pinterest is where dreams go to be organised into boards you’ll look at once, cry because money, then close the app and order baby stuff from Amazon at 3am instead. Been there. Still there.
Bonus: You’re Doing Great, Mama.
No, really. Whether you’re glowing or gagging, floating on cloud nine or Googling “how early is too early to nap forever,” you’re already smashing it. Pregnancy is weird and beautiful and full of “what the hell is happening to my body” moments — but you’ve got this.
And remember, there’s no right way to do it. Except maybe don’t try and use a foetal doppler at 2am while crying and eating dry cereal. Learned that one the hard way.
On A Serious Note… Do These Things!
- Confirm the Pregnancy
- Schedule Your First Prenatal Appointment: give your GP a call and they’ll send you a link to your local maternity centre. Don’t expect excitement from the GP receptionist, it’s just another call for them!
- Start Prenatal Vitamins – I love Pregnacare and Vitabiotics
- Adjust Your Lifestyle – you can still exercise if you feel well enough and socialise, but be kind to yourself and rest when you can!
- Share the News – there is still a stigma around the 12 week mark but it’s totally up to you who you tell and when!
Got your own funny pregnancy moment? Drop it in the comments so we can laugh (and cry) together, like the hormonal queens we are!
