Emma’s Diary Feature: When Is The Right Time For Baby Number 2?

By now, you know me well. I write all about my parenting journey on my blog and as a parent guest writer for Emma’s Diary. I am the happy (and tired) mum to a wild 15-month-old little boy and right now, life feels good. The crazy overwhelming newborn days are well behind us, he’s weaned and eats pretty much everything. Even his sleeping is more consistent and we’re getting more full nights with zero wake-ups than ever before.

Life is good.

So, naturally, it has resulted in many people asking me when I will go for baby number 2. It’s also got me thinking about it too…

Baby number 2: The General Consensus

Since Jack turned 1, I’ve had an influx of questions and cheeky quips about baby number 2. It seems that the first one turned one and it was fair game for people to comment.

In months gone by, these questions annoyed me. It always felt too personal and insensitive for people to ask. It put my nose out of joint many times. I’d bark back or give an aloof answer and then get annoyed with myself.

But now, something has shifted.

When people ask me, I take my time in answering. I think about it more now than ever before.

I ponder what life would be like with 2 children.

So, is there a right time for another baby?

If you follow me on Instagram, you’ll have seen that I’ve been asking my followers just that with polls and stories.

I asked my followers if there is a right time or if it is just a feeling. The majority came back to me with a feeling. That undeniable yearning and broodiness.

When you’re no longer terrified of newborns, sleep deprivation, the blur of days, and the haze of it all. When that is replaced with broodiness and an inner wanting that only a woman can understand.

Only you will know when that time will be.

It may be when your little one turns one. Potentially it’ll be when you’re back on a fitness regime and you finally feel like your old self. Maybe it’ll be in years to come when you get that “it’s oh so quiet” feeling.

We are very much a one and done family. I suffered acute pregnancy-related sciatica with Flora and at one point was scheduled for back surgery with no guarantee of success, potentially landing me in a wheelchair! So much as I love her and don’t regret a thing, there’s no way I could risk that happening again 🙂 As you say, it’s a feeling, and only you know if/when it’s right for you x

Thanks for sharing your thoughts on this. I don’t think there will ever be a right time for it. Some people may be ready as soon as they have the first one and others not so much. I also think lifestyle and mental health okay a role in this.

Wow what a question! For years I felt angry when asked, because of birth trauma & the fact we never thought we’d have another. Now I feel a lot better about the trauma of the first birth, we are having discussions but still totally undecided.

For me, I would have to just let fate decide & see what happens – the overthinking about it impacts me too much.

    But everyone is different!

As someone who doesn’t have any children, this was a really interesting read! I feel like society puts a lot of pressure on women for when the ‘right’ time is when in reality there’s no such thing; you just know. Thank you so much for sharing your thoughts x
