Emma’s Diary Feature: How Pregnancy Changed My Skincare Routine

As a skincare blogger and all-around enthusiast, I had no clue that pregnancy could have such an effect on the way I look, the way I feel and could change day to day.

Maybe I was aware of it pre-pregnancy but the reality is, your skin will change when you fall pregnant and your routine will need to adapt because of that.

My Skin History

I suffered from acne as a teenager and while at the time it felt like the end of the world, now when I look back at photos, I see just how mild it was overall.

I’d get large breakouts on my cheeks – big, red, angry-looking spots that needed attention straight away. My chin would be covered in little whiteheads around my period and I also suffered from the beautiful case of bacne (back acne, mainly focused on my shoulders) until I was about 21.

When I went to Uni and met my now-husband, I’d started investing more time in my skincare and being aware of the products that made my flare-ups appear worse and those that soothed them. I did it all on a Uni student budget and have been able to stick with the trusty high street brands ever since.

I do supplement my skincare with some high-end brands but pensively. If something works for me, I’m reluctant to change it.

I’ve always had combination skin. It’s oily in my T zone but dry on my cheeks, under my eyes and around my jaw. It’s the worst of both scenarios but it’s easy to treat when you know your skin.

How Pregnancy Has Changed My Skin

I had an inkling that I was pregnant a few days before I pee’d on the stick. Yes, my period was already five days but I felt different in myself. My usual pre-period breakouts hadn’t arrived but my skin felt more sensitive.

I found it super early and waited patiently for my pregnancy glow to arrive.

Little did I know that I would be waiting pretty much a whole trimester for it!

As a normal 29-year-old female, I’d always been sure to use daily SPF, day creams, night creams and had a firm skincare routine in place.

When I found out I was pregnant, my usual night cream suddenly smelt like mould. The usual, high street night cream that had been my old trusty for years suddenly stank of old, crispy mould.
