Emma’s Diary Feature: Why I Wasn’t Ready For My Son To Go Into His Own Room

As a new mummy, it feels like there is pressure thrown at you from all angles. If it’s not from within yourself, it’s from unsolicited advice, well-meaning but badly-delivered comments and sometimes even general information on your baby’s milestones.

Usually, I am able to block a lot of this out. I’ve shared plenty of funny examples of opinions and retorts that I’ve endured in the first 8 months of my son’s life. But, recently, there is one area of our lives that I have really struggled with.

Getting my baby son into his own room, in his own cot, self settling like a champ and sleeping through the night.

I Wasn’t Ready

If you’d have told me when my baby, Jack, was 6 weeks old that I’d be telling people “time goes so quickly”, I’d have laughed at you. Those first few weeks were a real slog: recovering from emergency surgery, getting to know my newborn, realising that life will never really be the same again!

But, since we hit the 6 week mark, time has flown as if we are on fast forward. I feel as if I’m getting his monthly milestone cards out every other day. He now sits unaided, he’s showing eagerness to crawl, he babbles and shouts Dada when my husband comes in the room. He’s a total little dude with a massive personality.

But, really, he’s still my little baby.

All of a sudden we hit that 6/7 month mark and it became the norm to be constantly asked “is he sleeping through the night?” and “is he in his own room now?”

I’m not a parent but I have heard from friends and family about the unsolicited comments and advice that many people like to give. I am sure it is quite frustrating when all you want to do is find what works for you and your baby. I’m just here to cheer you on!

I’ve definitely heard so many parents saying how time flies. You have to do what is right for you though, despite any opinions you get from other people. It’s definitely a shock to the system though I’d imagine because baby moving into their own room is like the first step of their independence.

My two were both very different. We knew A was ready around 5 months to go into her own room, but we kept E in ours for much longer. We didn’t even have her bedroom ready until she was bout 9/10 months old. Eeep! I’ve found that people judge you no matter what you do. You’ve just got to do whats best for you. You’re doing a cracking job!
