Planning your outfit for a winter wedding

A winter wedding creates an enchanting atmosphere. However, the colder weather often complicates the task of choosing an outfit. While you want to look polished and sophisticated, you need to stay comfortable – and warm enough. The key is knowing how to layer, select the right fabrics and choose accessories that complement the season.

Dress choices

Fabric and colour are essential when it comes to choosing wedding guest dresses for a winter wedding. Pick thicker materials that add warmth without sacrificing elegance. Velvet is an excellent choice, offering a luxurious, rich texture that’s simply too hot for the summer months. You could also consider wool-blend dresses, which offer a bit more warmth without being bulky.

When choosing a colour, jewel tones are a great option. Shades like emerald green, sapphire blue, and ruby red not only complement the season’s cooler tones but also add a sense of festivity to your look. Otherwise, a deep plum dress can look effortlessly chic.

When it comes to the cut, you might prefer full-length sleeves or a midi length that provides extra warmth.

Layering with purpose

Layering is a winter wedding game-changer. A longline coat in wool, a stylish trench coat or a tailored blazer will keep you toasty while outside without hiding your outfit entirely. Some might prefer a fitted and structured coat or blazer, while others might want something oversized. If you’re attending a wedding during the evening, consider adding a faux-fur wrap for a touch of glamour.

Remember to choose layering options that work with your chosen dress. Look for colours and textures that complement your dress rather than competing with it.

Footwear and accessories

Cold feet are the last thing you want at a wedding, so make sure you go for closed-toe shoes or boots. A chic pair of ankle boots with a small heel or stylish, knee-high boots can be both practical and fashionable. Leather or suede materials provide warmth while keeping your feet dry.

Meanwhile, metallic clutches or bags can create a seasonal pop, and statement jewellery offers extra impact, whether it’s a pair of bold earrings or a delicate necklace.

Practical finishing touches

If it works with you outfit, consider wearing tights or leggings under your dress, especially if you’ll be outside during the photos or when transitioning between venues. Thicker, opaque tights will add warmth and comfort, keeping you snug while still looking elegant.

Gloves are another practical and stylish addition. Choose a pair of leather or knitted gloves for moments when you’re asked to step outside.

If you’re really committed to staying warm without sacrificing style, discreet thermal layers underneath your outfit can make a difference. Look for thin, insulating underwear designed for layering. These will help you stay cosy without adding bulk to your outfit.
