Welcome To The Third Trimester: Your Guide
Hello, gorgeous mama-to-be! You’ve officially entered the home stretch—months 7, 8, and 9 of this wild ride that is pregnancy. Think of this as the pregnancy equivalent of the final level, but with more waddles, snack cravings, and nursery Pinterest boards.
I’m well into my third trimester, and it’s all starting to feel real. So from one mother to another, here’s my third trimester guide.
What’s Going On in That Belly (and Everywhere Else)
You’ve got a teeny human doing a serious growth spurt, and believe me—they’re not subtle about it. By week 31, most major development is done; now the baby’s packing on the pounds at roughly half a pound and half an inch per week. You may feel bigger (again) all of a sudden, or your belly may look as round as it will. This is my second pregnancy, so I was bigger at the beginning, and now I feel like I’ve not gotten any rounder for a while. It’s a wild ride.
You may feel less like Beyoncé and more like a waddling, shoe-tying-challenged version of yourself (shoelaces? What’s that?)—and using the loo has become your cardio of choice.

Third-Trimester To-Do List
Alright, grab that pregnancy notebook or your Notes app, if you prefer digital nesting, because here’s your must-have checklist:
- Move it, mama! Track those kicks; aim for 10 movements in two hours. Bonus points if you can guess which body part’s popping out. My baby seems to enjoy sticking their bottom up and out at all times of the day and night!
- …but nest too. Baby’s space needs love. Crib? Check. Bassinet? Check. Flat mattress that snugly fits? Double-check. I can’t wait to start washing tiny baby clothes – am I crazy?
- Birth plan time. Want dim lighting? No interventions? Interpretative dance during delivery? Jot your preferences, chat with your provider, and leave room for plot twists. I’m going for an elective c section and have got it all booked and sorted – know your options too!
- Pack that hospital bag. Mum needs snacks, comfy socks, and emergency lip balm. Partner needs… fewer things, but still: chargers and snacks aren’t optional. This time around, I’m also bringing a tablet pre-loaded with my favourite comedy shows, headphones, and my dream meal once the baby has arrived.
- Name game. Avoid initials that spell something questionable. Throw out unpopular options until you’re left with contenders that don’t make you cringe. We *think* we’ve got a shortlist!
- Read up. Breastfeeding, sleep training, baby care—get in some theoretical parenting homework now. You’ll thank yourself later. My blog is a great place to start reading & researching for the newborn and baby days.
- Talk to your bump. Yes, that’s giving baby early VIP access to your voice—and yes, it totally counts as bonding.
Navigating Bumps, Cramps & a Touch of Drama
Here are some of the less glamorous things to be on the look out for:
Swelling: Ankles looking like marshmallows? It’s normal—but if your face joins the party, ring your provider ASAP.
Leg cramps, fatigue & back pain: You’re basically carrying your own personal bowling ball inside you. Stretch, walk gently, and nap like your life depends on it (because it nearly does).
Braxton Hicks: Those “false labor” cramps? Weird, occasional, and usually harmless—unless you’re officially alarmed. Then, call your health team.
Sex? Often still a-okay unless your provider says otherwise. Your baby is safe in there—music to your ears? Maybe.
Clinic Visits: Your New Social Calendar
Starting from week 28, you’re seeing your healthcare provider every two weeks, and then weekly after week 36—and honestly? That’s the closest you’ll get to a night out these days. Ask ALL the questions, bring a list so you don’t forget (baby brain) and lean on those fabulous midwives for support!

Why This Period Is Special (Even When It’s Not)
This is a time of reflection, anticipation, and maybe some gentle panic—but mostly magic. It’s also a time to cherish your body’s remarkable adaptability and prepare to meet your mini-me.
So rest, laugh, chat to your bump, and bask in the glow (or sweat) of these final weeks. You’re not just nesting—you’re crafting a life launchpad.
All the love, a dash of humour, and a big hug,
