4 Ways to Support Your Ageing Parents’ Wellbeing
We all want our parents to be happy, but sometimes, they need a little bit of care and support in order for them to be so. As we age, it’s normal to acquire issues — both minor and major — that impact quality of life, and it’s not always possible for our parents to deal with them on their own. While you can’t magically ensure that they’re always on top of the world, you can gently guide them in that direction.
In this post, we’ll take a look at four effective strategies for supporting your parents while also looking after yourself.
Spend Quality Time
People tend to look in the rearview mirror when they get older. They focus on the good times they’ve had in the past. But humans are happiest when they’re continually doing good things, and arguably at their happiest when they have something to look forward to.
Ensuring that your parents are always invited to family outings and other events is a tried and tested way to provide a boost of positivity. You can also make specific plans with them relating to things that they want to do. Is there a place they’d like to visit nearby? A concert they want to go to? Organise it!
Provide Help
As we age, it becomes more difficult to take care of everyday tasks. As such, it’s inevitable that your parents will need at least a little help at some stage or another. You can make your parents’ lives easier by providing the help that they need. Even if it’s just cleaning their home or preparing meals, it’ll make a big difference. If you don’t have as much time as you’d like to provide help, or your parents require more complex care, get in touch with a home care agency — they’ll have the experience and expertise to know that your parents are being well looked after. Keep in mind, however, that your parents may not voluntarily request help; as such, it’s best to look for signs that they’re not coping at home by themselves as well as they should be.
Encourage Social Time
Many older people end up spending more time at home — often by themselves — than is recommended. Encouraging them to be social, be it getting together with other people of their age or joining a club aimed at seniors, is a good way to give their emotional and mental well-being a boost.
Take Care Of Yourself
Finally, remember that you can’t pour from an empty cup. While you might want to do everything you can to boost your parents’ wellbeing, it’s just as important to look after your own wellbeing, especially if you have other responsibilities, such as children or a career. Investing in your own well-being can take many different forms, including meditation, yoga, engaging with your hobbies, or spending time with friends. Whatever it is, you’re not selfish for doing it — in fact, the opposite is true. You’ll be able to do more for your parents when you feel fully charged and energised.

Spending quality time is so important. I like how you mentioned about self care too, as I think that’s very true too! I think our parents would find comfort in the fact we’re looking after ourselves better.
