The Four Best Sun Creams To Buy For Your Face

I’ve been banging on about SPF, skincare and the skin on your face and neck for what feels like the longest time. And yet, every time I share some of my skincare knowledge, I have readers tell me they needed to hear it. Well, that’s what I’m here for. Now that Spring is here (we’ll just ignore those flurries of snow over Easter weekend), I am excited to share my top picks of the best sun creams for your skin!

Us Brits love the sun, don’t we?

I’m just as guilty as the next person of rushing out to the beer garden as soon as the sun arrives. We’re all so excited to get a bit of warmth on our skin that we often forget about the dangers.

Yes, the sun is fabulous and being bronzed is a dream. But UV rays can be seriously harmful to our health. Luckily, there are so many easy ways to protect ourselves from them!

UV Rays & Our Faces

As I’ve said before, the skin on our faces is super delicate. But it is also super exposed. No matter what we do, parts of our faces will see the sunshine and be penetrated by harmful UV rays everyday.

These UV rays are the biggest contributing factor to skin ageing, sun damage and even skin cancer.

By using SPF, you will protect your skin instantly. These days, many make up and skincare brands know just how important this is. So, you’re likely to find some kind of SPF and UV protection in your daily creams and even in your primers.

My Top Sun Creams For Your Face

REN Clean Skincare Clean Screen Mineral SPF30

REN are a pioneer in ocean-safe products and packaging. I worked with REN to help launch their Ever Calm range a few years ago and they became a quick but firm favourite. I’ve been re-stocking their Overnight Recovery Balm since 2018.

Their Clean Screen Mineral SPF cream is filled with zinc oxide which helps to shield against UVA, UVB and even blue light damage.

This cream is not oily and can be lathered on too thick. It is clean in application, in staying power and in protection. It’s double effective as a primer too – something I’m passionate about. If our products can have multi-uses, we can consume less, create less plastic and less waste and live more sustainably.

Aveda Daily Light Guard Defence Fluid

For everyday life when you aren’t laid out on a towel in your ‘kini with a good book, you need Aveda’s Daily Light Guard Defence Fluid.

The clue is in the name for this sun cream: fluid. It literally melts into your skin while leaving you fully protected.

Made from 100% mineral derived creams, the formula is paraben free and packed with natural and herbal ingredients. Each ingredient builds to ensure that your skin is shielded from UV rays and environmental stresses.

For me, the higher the SPF, the better. This one begins at 30 and I think that this is the minimum you should apply to the precious skin on your face and neck!

Green People’s Scent Free Facial Sun Cream – SPF30

A broad spectrum SPF and facial cream that can be used daily, Green People have smashed it with this gentle sun cream.

I use this protection for when I’m sitting deliberately in the sun because of the texture and coverage. It is thick and glorious, buildable and moisturising. It’s scent free and non-greasy so you can use it as a base for a full face or as a daily protection barrier for sunbathing.

The formula contains natural remedies such as rosemary edelweiss which work as antioxidants and anti-inflammatories.

This one is my favourite for my fiancé. He has sensitive skin and really suffers if sun cream gets in his eyes.

Stay tuned – I’m working with Green People this season on some of their new skincare launches!

Drunk Elephant Umbra Sheer Physical Daily Defence SPF 30

Another brand that I trust for formulas and packaging that is non-toxic to marine life. Drunk Elephant exploded onto the blogging scene a few years ago and has set its feet securely under the skincare table.

Filled with antioxidants like sunflower shoot extract and astaxanthin, this daily defence SPF is a dream for those long summer days.

It has serious staying power and will sink into your skin with no need to reapply all day long.

Your skin will feel both moisturised and protected. If the natural formulas and brand ethos don’t get them into your basket, the product itself will set itself!

However you choose to protect your skin this sunny season, make sure that it is done thoroughly and as often as possible.

Give your skin a break and remember to stay out of the sun between 12pm and 3pm when the sun is at its most powerful.

Let’s enjoy the sun without living with the damage and consequences. Prevention is better than a cure!
