How To Avoid Maskne
These really are unprecedented times that we are living in. If, this time last year, someone had said to me that I’d be writing a blog post on how to avoid maskne, I would think they were mad. But, corona times and here we are. As a blogger known for their skincare knowledge and helpful advice, I am asked A LOT about how to avoid spots and outbreaks caused by the masks we have to wear outside of our house. So, here are my quick and easy tips!

What Is Maskne?
Wearing face masks and shields has become part of our everyday life and it is something that we should all be doing for the safety of ourselves and of others. Unfortunately, masks can be uncomfortable, ill fitting and can cause your skin to break out. The outbreaks can come from over use, mask friction against your skin, the warm environment created by your trapped breath which creates a breeding ground for bacteria and sensitivity.
If you already suffer with skin conditions such as eczema, acne and rosacea, you may find that your breakouts are happening more than ever before!

Other Mask Side Effects
This new world presents so many obstacles for many and maskne is not the only issue that you may be presented with.
The use of fabric masks, like the one I am using below, can often absorb the goodness from your skin, not to mention the bacteria around your now shielded mouth, and result in giving you dry skin around your nose, mouth and chin area.
The pressure from wearing a face mask (which is only effective is won snugly on your face) can lead to breaks and redness in the skin around your jaw line, mouth, nose and chin. Pair this with the fact that the breath and bacteria you are exhaling aren’t being emitted into an open space, you’ve got a hot bed for sore area of skin that need some fresh air and space.
Another factor could be the overheating of your skin. I don’t know about you, but when I wear my mask for any length of time, I become overly hot and flustered. I worry that people can’t hear me and I worry that my mask is slipping and protecting me correctly. But, this unnatural heat on your sensitive skin can cause oily area and patches. Excess oil can block pores and cause build up on your skin and increase your chances of an acne outbreak.
What a terrible time!

How To Avoid Maskne
Here are some really easy tips to help you avoid the dreaded maskne:
– Ensure that you use masks only once and should not be overly touched while in use. Wash those masks guys!
– Store your masks correctly – do not do what I did recently and in a panic, stuff your fresh out of the washing machine mask into your handbag and then put it on at the store door. The inside of your handbag is a haven for germs and Lord knows what else!
– If you can, use single use masks but make sure that they are adjusted to your face correctly – you can buy mask adjuster really easily here.
– If you use a reusable face mask and covering, make sure that you are washing it with the right products. I personally use a liquid washing detergent that I use for my boyfriend’s super sensitive skin. It smells amazing and my skin can breathe easily!
– Cleanse, wash and moisturise. Regardless of your mask, you should do this as often as possible. The seasons are about to change and so your skin will thank you if you’re on the ball before that!

If you’re suffering with maskne, you are not alone. But with these tips, you won’t have to suffer any longer! Take care of your skin, but most importantly, say safe!
