My Summer Home Improvement Plans

Like so many of you, I now work from home full time. If I’m being honest, this was my end goal. I have worked so hard in many different careers to get where I am today and I’m pretty happy that I’m now a full-time home office, slipper-wearing, tea-slurping worker. But being at home all day long does make you realise just how many things need doing around the house. I’ve got some dream home improvement plans for almost every room in the house. Ready to find out what they are?

The Most Important Room

To call my office a room is a little generous. I wasn’t alone when the pandemic hit, I was working in the kitchen, on the island in the world’s most uncomfortable chair.

When it looked like working from home would no longer be a novelty but a necessity, I knew it was time to upgrade my office space.

I gladly hauled my laptop, files, notepads, post-it notes, and headphones upstairs into a perfect niche in the spare room.

The room itself is already home to our old bed and some built-in furniture and it’s the perfect place to work, be creative and get some much-needed peace and quiet.

My house is old Victorian style with a chimney breast that runs through it and giant bay windows.

The bay windows were a massive pull in the buying factor of my home. They are timeless, they add so much room and they light up the area beautifully.

I can sit and write to my heart’s content at my desk while glancing outside at trees blowing and birds flying. It’s glorious and perfect for getting my creative juices flowing.

I’d love to update the bay window in my office. It would be a big job and it would take more than my project management but Three Counties have just the right range and team to help me! The Family Room

In all the years that I’ve lived in my home, we’ve never had a dining room table.

Some of my happiest childhood memories are of sitting around the table and telling everyone about my day. It’s when the best conversations can happen.

So, we haven’t needed a dining room table as of yet – we’ve got a lovely kitchen island which is more than big enough. Christmas dinner, however, isn’t an intimate one with each of us at different ends.

Because the style of our house is Victorian, we almost have two living/reception rooms in one. Over the next few months, I’d love to invest in a massive dining room table to place in the second living room.

I am dying for large dinner parties, lovely spreads for girlie nights in the dining area, and a Christmas dinner where I can pull my cracker without having to get up and scoot around the kitchen.

Outdoor Rooms

That sun was shining, wasn’t it!? Why is it that you only realise how poorly ventilated your house is when England is 36 degrees and you’ve got to work!?

We get absolutely zero shade in our garden. I usually love that but my goodness last week was HOT!

Over the next few years, I’d love to transform my garden so that it has a shed with a gym at the bottom of it and then add areas for shade.

I’m not into crazy awnings or parasols you have to dig into the ground. I’m thinking something simple like a pergola with some shade and a seating area that gives me some respite from the heat.

My current shed is a bit of a mess. It works and when something isn’t broke, don’t fix it. But it gets so incredibly hot in there and the lack of air circulating is enough to suffocate you on a warm day.

I want to upgrade the doors so that they let the sunshine in and let some heat out. I am a big fan of French doors, they are so classic and really do the trick. I don’t need anything fussy or overly fancy out there!

The Toilet

Our downstairs toilet is really the only room in the house that hasn’t had some kind of make-over. I think it’s finally time to get thrifty and begin giving it an upgrade.

We’re super lucky that we have a downstairs toilet because it means that there is no need for anyone to go upstairs on my cream carpet when we have people over.

But it also means that the little room gets a lot of traffic.

I’d love to tile the entire suite from floor to ceiling, add a new and thicker door and make the floor tiled so that it all super easy to clean.

It can wait, it’s not urgent but I’m starting to get itchy to get it done. Pray for my fiance when I tell him I’ve got the decorating bug again!

Your Upgrades

You’re home a lot more than normal now, so what kind of upgrades would you love to give your home? Even just a room – there is so much that can be done on quite a small budget.
