How You Can Help A Friend Looking To Get In Better Shape
*Collaborative Post
Getting into better shape, embracing a healthier lifestyle, and losing weight can be very sensitive subjects. If someone comes to you to ask for help getting into shape, you might feel a lot of pressure and responsibility. You don’t want to let this person down, but at the same time, finding that balance between motivation and instruction is a little tricky.
On the plus side, now that Coronavirus restrictions have been rolled back in the UK, it is a lot easier for us to get back out there and support our friends and family. If someone has asked you for help getting into a healthier shape, here are a few things you can try.
Start With A Plan
Talk to your friend about what they want to achieve, specifically. Do they want to be more physically fit, capable of running a circuit around the park without having to sit down? Are they looking to shed some of that lockdown weight? Do they just want to be healthier in a more general sense?
Once you know what they’re looking for, start by breaking down the preparatory steps required. Look at their current diet and talk to them about what they can cut out. Ask them about how much time they have to exercise in a day and think about what activities will work best. Help them to create a routine for their meals and workouts that suits them. But of course, in some cases, they might be considering different approaches, from structured fitness programs to options like medicated weight loss, especially if they’ve struggled with traditional methods in the past. Overall, the key is to support their journey in a way that works best for them
Keep It Fresh
There are a lot of people out there who don’t ask for help with exercise and physical fitness because they think they’re going to get shouted at. We all remember that one gym teacher who made our lives a misery. Now, your friend may well ask you to give them a little tough love but it’s important to show that exercise is not just about pain and sweat.
Don’t just do laps of the block, look for river runs, forests, and national parks. You should also look for ways to personalise the workout gear. Don’t just go for grey sweats and old t-shirts. Embrace the fact that this is a new leaf by treating yourselves to new clothes, kit, and accessories. For example, check out this collection of Fitbit watch straps which come in a range of different colours for a wide selection of models.
Keep It Fun
We’ve talked about the importance of personalising the experience and exploring new places while you work out. But it’s also important to stress that you should look for ways to reward effort and celebrate achievements. Using a personal fitness app will allow you to set milestones and markers, and to show your friend just how much progress they have been making. Remember to include days off and cheat days in your schedule. You also need to make sure that you are listening to what your friend is telling you. Don’t push them further than they can go and remind them that it’s fine to slow things down or hit pause if they are finding it too difficult. Physical activity can improve mental health but there’s a fine line between reaching for that breakthrough and breaking down because of it.
