Surviving Toddlerhood: Summer Edition

Because raising a toddler in summer is like herding cats… in a heatwave.

Hello summer! The season of sun-kissed cheeks, sticky ice cream fingers, and the ever-present chorus of “I’m boooored!” If you’re a parent of a toddler, like me, you know that summer isn’t all beach days and barbecues—it’s also about finding creative ways to keep your little whirlwind entertained without losing your sanity (or your wine stash). 0% wine in my case – more on that coming soon!

To help you embrace the fun of summer instead of dreading it, here are my top tips, easy-to-follow activities, and more.

1. The Backyard Beach

Can’t make it to the seaside? No problem! Transform your garden into a mini beach paradise. Fill a pop-up tent with play sand, toss in some beach toys, and voila! You’ve got yourself a DIY sandpit.

If you’ve already got a sandpit, you could spend some time burying favourite toys and doing a “big dig” with your toddler.

2. Water Play – Always A Winner!

When the heat is on, nothing beats water play. Set up a paddling pool (The Works offers options starting at just £1.99), or let your toddler “paint” the patio with water and a brush. It’s mess-free and surprisingly entertaining. For added fun, freeze small toys in ice cubes and let your little one “rescue” them—a perfect activity for those sweltering afternoons.

One activity that my toddler loves (and lets me eat an ice cream in peace) is setting up a car wash for his ride-on toys. We buy sponges, and he gets all my buckets out. He helps me fill them and squeeze washing-up liquid. I let him use the hose to “wash” his ride-on toys and he loves it! Hours of fun.

3. Nature Scavenger Hunts

Turn your local park into an adventure land with a simple nature scavenger hunt. Create a list of items to find—like a feather, a smooth rock, or a yellow flower—and let your toddler explore. It’s a great way to burn energy and learn about the world around them. Plus, it’s free.

4. Indoor Camping Adventures

When the weather doesn’t cooperate, bring the fun indoors. Set up a tent or blanket fort in the living room, grab some snacks, and have an indoor camping adventure. Tell stories, play games, and enjoy a picnic on the floor. It’s a cosy way to spend quality time together without even feeling the rain.

Unleash your toddler’s inner artist with some simple crafts. Think paper plate animals, handprint art, or homemade playdough. Not only does it keep them occupied, but it also helps develop fine motor skills. Just be prepared for a bit of mess—and maybe some glitter in unexpected places.

Are you adding these to your summer list?

Surviving toddlerhood during the summer months is all about creativity, flexibility, and a good sense of humour. Remember, it’s okay if not every day is Pinterest-perfect. The important thing is making memories with your little one—even if those memories involve melted ice lollies and impromptu sprinkler sessions.
