10 Fun Gruffalo Activities for Toddlers: Let’s Bring the Story to Life!

If there’s one story that’s been a constant hit in our household, it’s The Gruffalo! Julia Donaldson’s classic tale has captured the hearts of so many little ones, and it’s no wonder. With its catchy rhymes, lovable characters, and that huge twist at the end (who doesn’t love a clever little mouse?), It’s the perfect story for toddlers. But why stop at just reading the book?

If your toddler is as obsessed with The Gruffalo as mine, you’ll love these 10 fun and easy Gruffalo-inspired activities that’ll bring the magic of the forest to life! Let’s jump into the deep, dark wood and start exploring!

1. Gruffalo Footprint Hunt

What better way to start your Gruffalo adventure than with a footprint hunt? Cut out some giant Gruffalo paw prints from paper and place them around your garden or living room. Let your toddler follow the trail, searching for the Gruffalo (or a sneaky mouse!). You could even hide some Gruffalo treats at the end as a reward!

We love this activity when we need to burn some energy and take them out on trail walks. This is also a perfect one for getting your toddler involved with the prep a few days before – they won’t know what they’re prepping but you can boost their cutting skills all in one go!

2. Make Your Own Gruffalo Mask

Get crafty with your little one by making a Gruffalo mask! All you need is a paper plate, some brown paint or felt tips, and a bit of imagination. Help your toddler glue on some prickles, draw on big eyes, and add those “terrible tusks”! Once their mask is ready, they can pretend to be the Gruffalo and stomp around the house.

3. Gruffalo Playdough Creations

Break out the playdough and let your toddler create their very own Gruffalo and forest friends! Use brown dough for the Gruffalo, orange for his eyes, and white for his sharp teeth. Encourage your little one to roll, squish, and mould their favourite characters – it’s a great way to build those fine motor skills too!

4. Gruffalo Snack Platter

Time for some tasty fun! Create a Gruffalo-themed snack platter with all the favourite foods from the story. Think owl ice cream (yogurt with blueberries), scrambled snake (twisted breadsticks), and roasted fox (carrot sticks or orange slices). Your toddler will love munching on these delicious snacks while pretending they’re in the deep, dark wood!

My toddler LOVES being involved with food prep so this one is always a winner. Also it takes up a good chunk of time if you’re feeling like you need a longer task.

5. Gruffalo Sensory Bin

Toddlers LOVE sensory play, so why not make a Gruffalo sensory bin? Fill a large container with leaves, pinecones, sticks, and plastic animals like owls, snakes, and foxes. Add a little Gruffalo toy or figurine, and let your toddler explore the textures and characters. It’s a wonderful way to bring the forest to life and spark their imagination!

Pinterest and TikTok are great places to get inspiration from!

6. Gruffalo Yoga

Yes, you heard me right! How about a little Gruffalo-themed yoga session? You and your toddler can act out the characters – stretch tall like a tree, slither like a snake, fly like an owl, and stomp like the Gruffalo! It’s a fun and active way to get moving while acting out the story. ‍

Cosmic Kids are a life-saver for high-energy children like mine, stick them on Youtube and get stretching with your little one!

7. Create a Gruffalo Story Box

For this activity, you’ll need a shoebox, some craft supplies, and a bit of imagination. Help your toddler create their very own “deep dark wood” inside the box – with trees, paths, and of course, the Gruffalo! You can use little figurines or homemade paper characters to tell the story in a whole new way.

8. Gruffalo Colouring Time

Sometimes, the simplest activities are the best! Print out some Gruffalo colouring sheets (The Gruffalo website has loads of free ones!) and grab some crayons or markers. Colouring is not only relaxing for toddlers, but it’s also a great way to develop their creativity and fine motor skills. ️

9. Gruffalo Storytime Picnic

Why not turn your next storytime into a Gruffalo-themed picnic? Pack a few snacks (you can even make the Gruffalo snacks mentioned earlier!), grab a blanket, and head to the park or your garden. Read the book together outdoors, surrounded by trees – it’ll feel like you’ve stepped right into the deep, dark wood!

Better yet, take your picnic on a Gruffalo trail! We love Alice Holt near us.

10. Gruffalo Shadow Puppets

This activity is perfect for those cosy, darker evenings. Cut out simple shapes of the Gruffalo, the mouse, and the other animals, then attach them to sticks or straws. Use a torch or lamp to create shadows on the wall and retell the story with your very own shadow puppet show. It’s a magical way to bring the tale to life and will mesmerise your little one! ️
