Guest Post: 6 Things To Do At The Start of Every Month

This is a guest post from the fabulous Lauren, Bournemouth Girl

Start of a new month is a fresh start, a blank canvas and an opportunity for success. Each new month is an exciting opportunity for you to reflect and re-assess. Practising reflection is such a great task that helps you to focus on what you have achieved and to motivate you to do better in the following month.

Completing certain monthly tasks will give you a chance to reset your life. It enables you to start a new month organised and prepared, which will help you to be more productive. Being more organised and productive is going to enable you to complete your goals more easily. If you struggle to be organised, start with these small, monthly tasks.

Here Are 6 Tasks To Do At The Start Of Each Month To Promote Organisation:

1. Reflect On Your Previous Month

At the start of a new month, it is important to reflect on what has occurred and the accomplishments of the previous month. You should acknowledge the small wins and not just the bigger achievements. Not only do you want to reflect on the achievements, but assess what did not go well or what you do better. By reflecting, you start the new month with better focus.

Journaling prompts can be a good way to reflect; here are 6 prompts you can try:

  • What went well this month?
  • What didn’t go so well?
  • What lessons did I learn this month?
  • What challenges did I face this month?
  • What am I spending too much time on?
  • What am I spending too little time on?

Using a journal can be a great way to reflect but also gives you reliable records that you can look back upon and see how far you have come. Reflecting on your previous month will help give you clarity and direction for the new month ahead.

2. Set New Goals And Your Focus

A new month means an opportunity to set new goals and a new focus. Setting achievable goals will help grow your success and your personal development. Setting goals and targets are a powerful motivation and will keep you accountable for progress.

It is vital that you remember to make your goals achievable. Here are 6 tips to keep in mind:

  • Set specific goals
  • Break down larger goals
  • Celebrate every success
  • Track your progress
  • Learn from your setbacks
  • Good time management

Remember, you are only setting monthly goals, so do not over-commit as it could lead to being overwhelmed and/or not achieving them.

3. Make A List Of Incomplete Tasks

Before setting new tasks and working on new goals, you need to identify a list of tasks that are incomplete from the previous month. Analysing the tasks is key as some incomplete tasks may be irrelevant and others may need to be finished before the deadline. When you have finished those tasks, you can put all your focus and energy onto your new goals for the month.

4. Declutter Your Email’s Junk Folder

Your emails can get very cluttered with adverts, subscriptions, and business emails, so you should be clearing them out regularly. Deleting unimportant emails and evaluating your subscriptions will enable you to unsubscribe from the companies you no longer wish to have contact with, which is something that we all keep meaning to get around to!

When you have cleared out your emails, it will help you to be more organised and you are less likely to miss important emails and deadlines. A great addition to completing this task monthly is that it is actually good for the planet. How so? Well, you are actually reducing your carbon footprint! Did you know that nearly 107 billion spam emails are sent and received on a daily basis? If everyone deleted just 10 of those emails, they could save 1,725,000 gigabytes of storage space and around 55.2 million kilowatts of power!

5. Clear Out Your Social Media DMs And Platform

Social media DMs can get crowded with spam messages and group invites amongst other messages, so the start of the month is the ideal time to go through, clear out all the unimportant messages and remove yourself from the groups that you are no longer active in. by doing this, you will not miss important messages, or a pitch from a brand if you are a content creator.

I always feel so much clearer when I have done this at the start of a month; something this small makes a massive difference. Here are 5 benefits of a social media cleanse:

  • Reduced feelings of anxiety
  • Improved quality of sleep
  • You feel encouraged to talk to people
  • More focus for things you love
  • An increase in your productivity

6. A Paper Clear Out

Throughout a month, you accumulate pieces of paper; it could be to-do lists, mail that hasn’t been filed, or even receipts from your most recent purchases. Using the time at the start of a month to file or recycle the loose papers can help you to declutter your bag, home, or workspace. Having a tidy and organised home and workspace means you will be able to put your hands on specific paperwork when it is needed. Having loose papers around makes your space untidy, which can affect your productivity, sleep, and even your mental health.

These are just 6 small, monthly tasks that you can do to increase your organisation and your productivity. Start completing these activities and watch the impact they have.

What monthly tasks do you complete to stay organised? I’d love to hear in the comments.
