The Best Things to Do with a Toddler in Windsor this Autumn & Winter
The season of crisp air, cosy sweaters, and vibrant foliage is upon us, and there’s no better time to explore my hometown of Windsor with your little ones. If, like me, you’re a parent of a curious toddler, you know how important it is to keep them entertained and engaged, especially as the weather starts to cool. We’ve officially had our first snow fall over night so these ideas and locations will be perfect now more than ever! Luckily, Windsor has so much to offer families during this magical season. Whether you’re after outdoor adventures, cultural experiences, or cosy indoor activities, Windsor has it all. Here are the best things to do with a toddler in Windsor this autumn & winter!
1. Explore the Great Park
Windsor Great Park is the perfect spot for an autumnal adventure with your toddler. Let your little one run free among the crunchy leaves, explore the beautiful woodland trails, and enjoy a peaceful walk by the lake. The park’s vast open spaces make it ideal for toddlers to burn off some energy while you take in the stunning autumn scenery. Don’t forget to bring a picnic! There’s nothing like enjoying a hot chocolate and some snacks surrounded by the beauty of nature.
We love the Great Park so much because it’s so local, there’s free parking but there are limited roads. Meaning, my toddler can run around without having to be aware of oncoming traffic. Pure freedom for a toddler.
Top Tip: Stop by the Savill Garden to discover gorgeous seasonal flowers and shrubs – a great spot for family photos!
2. Visit Legoland Windsor Resort
Legoland Windsor is always a hit with kids, but during the autumn months, it transforms into a magical wonderland with special seasonal events. If you’ve followed me for a while, you’ll know that we have the Annual Toddler Pass and that we go A LOT.
From spooky Halloween fun to festive events, Legoland offers plenty of toddler-friendly rides and attractions that are sure to delight your little one. The DUPLO Valley area is perfect for toddlers, with gentle rides, play areas, and interactive experiences designed just for them. We’ve now graduated from DUPLO Valley to the bigger rides as Jack has shot up. Now we’ve got even more to explore each time we visit!
Top Tip: Plan your visit around one of Legoland’s special events, like Brick or Treat or Legoland At Christmas, for an extra dose of fun!
3. Take a Stroll Along the River Thames
Wrap up warm and take a leisurely stroll along the River Thames. The riverside walk in Windsor is perfect for toddlers, with plenty of ducks to feed and boats to watch. The views of Windsor Castle are breath taking, and there are plenty of spots to stop for a snack or a hot drink along the way. Even though I’ve lived here for most of my life, it still makes me pinch myself. If your toddler is up for it, you can even hop on a riverboat cruise for a unique perspective of Windsor from the water.
Top Tip: Bring some bread or birdseed to feed the ducks – it’s a simple activity that always excites little ones!
4. Visit Windsor Castle
Introduce your toddler to a bit of history with a visit to Windsor Castle. While it might not be the first place you think of for toddlers, Windsor Castle offers plenty of fascinating sights and spacious grounds for them to explore. Little ones will be in awe of the grand architecture and might even catch a glimpse of the Changing of the Guard – a mesmerizing spectacle for all ages. The castle grounds also offer space for toddlers to roam, making it a surprisingly family-friendly destination.
Top Tip: Visit on a quieter weekday morning to avoid the crowds and make the most of the castle’s wide-open spaces.
5. Discover Autumn at Windsor Farm Shop
For a more relaxed day out, head over to Windsor Farm Shop. ️ Here, you can enjoy a leisurely morning browsing the selection of fresh produce, locally sourced goodies, and delicious treats. Your toddler will love picking out their own little pumpkin or tasting some autumnal snacks. Afterward, take a stroll around the nearby fields and let your little one explore the countryside at their own pace. You may even be lucky enough to spot a local Royal doing their shopping!
Top Tip: Stop by the café for a warming cup of tea and a slice of cake while your toddler enjoys a treat from the bakery. We love to people watch and share a yummy cake.
6. Enjoy a Day at The Look Out Discovery Centre
Just a short drive from Windsor, The Look Out Discovery Centre in Bracknell is a fantastic indoor option for those cooler autumn days. ️ This hands-on science and nature centre is designed for young children, with interactive exhibits, water play, and a huge outdoor adventure playground. It’s the perfect place to keep your toddler entertained and learning, even when the weather isn’t cooperating.
Top Tip: Dress your toddler in layers – they’ll be moving between indoor and outdoor areas, so it’s good to be prepared for all temperatures!
9. Attend The Windsor Food Market
Windsor and the surrounding areas are known for their charming local festivals and fairs, especially during the autumn season. Every third Saturday of the month is the Windsor Food Market. We love pottering around the high street and shopping local. Our favourite stall is Cup of Rosie. Their sweet treats are INCREDIBLE! If you’re in Windsor, you HAVE to check out their hidden little coffee shop on Castle Hill.
Top Tip: Keep an eye on community boards and social media for updates on upcoming events – these are often great, low-cost family outings.
9. Cosy Up in a Local Café
Tiny Towne, Cup of Rosie, Harpers are three of my favourites.
After a busy morning of exploring, there’s nothing better than cosying up in a local café with your toddler. Windsor has plenty of charming spots where you can warm up with a hot drink and a snack. Many of the cafés in the area are family-friendly, with high chairs, kid’s menus, and even play areas to keep your little one entertained while you enjoy a moment of peace.
Top Tip: Visit a café near Windsor Great Park or the River Thames for lovely views while you relax.
