Three Ways To Recharge While Working From Home
Working from home, at least for some part of your week, is completely the norm now. The post-lockdown world has enabled workers across many different verticals to access their work anywhere and still make a success of their careers. As a freelancer, I work with many different clients, in many different time zones and all at home. Never in my PJs but always at home either in my home office or in my living room while also being with my baby Jack. But, it’s quite easy to burn out when your work from home. Today’s blog post is all about how you can recharge without even leaving your desk this New Year.

Gentle Exercises & Desk Yoga
If you’re like me, it can be hard to tear yourself away from your mounting to do list, meeting prep and pops of motivation to get writing. I tend to go for at least a walk around the block when I’m working but if I can’t, I always try to do some quick exercises at my desk.
My body yearns to move, I feel instantly better after even just taking a few long, deep breaths. Stretching out my limbs reminds me not to hunch over my laptop and notes so avidly.
Without even getting up, I can do some quick yoga and back stretches and feel instantly recharged.
Sometimes when I’m having a particularly stressful morning, I like to put on a playlist of whale songs (no, really) and zone out for five to ten minutes, stretch, breathe and regroup.
It sounds silly but it really makes the world of difference.
I come back to my work refreshed, ready to go again at lightning speed!

Take A Break – Play Games At Your Desk
My work can sometimes be very serious. A lot of it is deadline orientated and I am expected to deliver large projects, big pieces of compelling content and brand-changing assets.
It can be really stressful to juggle it all – not to mention my ten month who wants to get into everything and talks all the way through my meetings!
I like to jump online to Solitaire and play a quick game with the radio blasting. The ease and simple format means I can concentrate on a quick game between jobs.
The games on Solitaire are easy to use, quick to play and add a bit of comic relief to my otherwise busy day. I will warn you: you will be come addicted!
My favourite games for a quick brain break are:
- Solitaire
- Jungle Pyramid
- Wild West

Give Your Eyes A Break
My eyes get so dry and sore after being in long meetings, writing content and staring at my screen for hours on end. If I’m not rubbing them back into life I’m scrunching them to get them to focus.
The easiest way to recharge is to simply step away and give my eyes a break.
I like to avoid all screens for a few minutes and simply get outside (if I can) or go and sit in the living room and listen to a podcast.
If my eyes are feeling particularly sore and tired, I treat myself to a Space Mask – they are lined with gentle heat pads that warm your eye area for around 15 minutes. They are AMAZING!
Take A Break – You Deserve It!
Take my advice and step away, even just for a few moments. You’ll feel recharged and reenergised when you do!

I don’t often work from home, but when I have I found getting outside in my lunch break to be an absolute lifesaver!

I’m a bit solitaire nerd! I don’t know how you work with J around. Props to you. I can’t do it. I’ve tried so many times, especially when I’ve got deadlines to meet. A’s not so bad, but E’s just so into everything I can’t get the laptop out without her trying to whack it. And then I get even more frustrated. Ha. X

These are great tips, Rosie! I am sure you are stretched thin right, left and centre, but I can also do with these sometimes when this whole work from home deal gets a little over my head!

I love these tips! I find if I sit down for more than 30 minutes, I start to feel bored, tired and restless. So I try to get up every 30 minutes or so and do some stretches and exercises. Sometimes I go on the exercise bike or go for a walk, too. It breaks the day up a bit, too

Something that I need to do more often is give my eyes a break for a little. These are very helpful!
